08/06/2025 Summertime

Summertime

We’ve had an unusually mild summer so far with overcast marine layer most mornings until 9am. These conditions  lend themselves to all sorts of subjects.  By the middle of the day, the temperature has been climbing so the insects have been out and about. I’ve already seen several Praying Mantis.

Peekaboo

As you can see, they come in differnet colors 🙂

Hazy Grebes @LakeHodgesPhotoTours

The warmth still manages to penetrate the low cloud marine layer to generate an interesting hazy effect on the water.

Great Blue Heron @LakeHodgesPhotoTours

And just as the sun starts to peak through, it’s still low enough in the sky to illuminate the locals. A Great Blue Heron having breakfast.

And when the feeding is good, there are usually other birds taking part. A Great Egret getting in on the action.

Black-necked Stilts @LakeHodgesPhotoTours

Due to the heat, the Lake Level is also dropping with evaporation which means there is again some shoreline and muddy flats, perfect for probing birds like Black-necked Stilts. A breeding pair got to work. The photo shows one of the parents and one of the kids.

I’ve also seen at least 3 male Blue Grosbeaks in the brush around the edge of the Lake along with at least and one female.

Any given morning the ever changing waterline and light can lead to some surprisingly beautiful results. A Snowy Egret walking the shallows.

Misty Mornings @LakeHodgesPhotoTours

And if landscapes are your thing, it’s been pretty moody each morning.

Western Tiger Swallowtail @LakeHodgesPhotoTours

We’re halfway through round 2 with the Monarchs and in the interim I’ve had plenty of Swallowtails to keep me busy.

Bunny @LakeHodgesPhotoTours

And then there’s the bunny impersonating a well behaved dog….. 🤣

Please contact me directly by email if interested in heading out on the Lake or walking the area for any photography or videography. The Lake has only a limited number of days each week / season open for boating, so I’m happy to visit other local reservoirs and locations if needed. Walking and hiking is accessible any day, 365 days a year.  As a 30+ year resident I’m very familiar with all of San Diego County and have a pulse on the local activity.  Feel free to share on your preferred Social Media, and subscribe at the foot of this page.

Until next time

And a reminder of my Website for purchasing my ART.

https://www.lakehodgesphototours.art/shop-art

One of my favorite aspects of the site is the way in which a potential print can be hung on a mockup of the room in which it’s intended. The room can be changed, the wall color can be changed, and even a photo loaded of the ACTUAL room. Shop with confidence that the print will indeed compliment the room and décor. https://www.lakehodgesphototours.art/shop-art.

If there are any specific prints you’d like that are not yet on the site, please let me know and I’ll get the high res versions loaded.
