Opening Day – Wed Feb 4th -Grebe activity is happening right now – Valentines Day Images
It’s been a busy month. Grebes are doing their thing and I’ve been monitoring the action. Here are a selection from the last few weeks.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the action. I don’t usually see the weed dance so early in the season. This striking photograph captures the intimate moment between two Western Grebes, showcasing their elegant forms and vibrant red eyes against the lush backdrop tules. The gentle ripples of the water reflect their connection, embodying the beauty of wildlife in its natural habitat. As a nature photographer and guide, I aim to share these fleeting moments that highlight the rich biodiversity of our local environment.
In between the action – I REALLY enjoy seeing grebes calm and relaxed.
For me, that’s the real measure of success as a photographer and guide: knowing I’ve earned their trust and created a peaceful space where wildlife can simply be.
As a nature photographer dedicated to showcasing the wildlife of Lake Hodges, I aim to share these peaceful moments that highlight the delicate balance of our environment.
And I better include at least one classic rush in this month’s collection…. It looked like it was going to be a threesome but the one in the middle decided to stay put.
This is one I captured this morning. The sparkle of backlit grebes in courtship—one of nature’s most breathtaking performances. When the light is just right, every splash becomes a constellation, and the energy between these birds is almost electric.
Now, a slight departuire from Grebes updates. Last year I documented nesting Nuttall’s Woodpeckers. This year it’s Allen’s Hummingbirds. In a few days I expect to see the first chicks appearing. The excitement is palpable.
The hummingbird is not the only nest I’ve been watching. This successful pair from a couple of years ago will likely be nesting again in the same area. I’ve been monitoring and will post updates as they become available.
I think he’s ok, he’s within the speed limit 🙂 This young buck was thinking about heading to the Lake then did a quick about face and headed back to the chaparral. Maybe he saw a coyote, there appear to be more around the lake and adjacent hills than in previous years.
Opening day for boating will be Next Wednesday Feb 4th. As usual the volunteers with ‘Kayaking for the Birds’ were out on the lake doing a cleanup – discarded fishing line and lure removal, and trash pickup. As usual we found a few lures that could (and) have easily snagged birds. If interested in volunteering, please reach out to me as I’m the coordinator.
And with Valentines Day nearly upon us, here’s a reminder of my Website for purchasing my ART. Every print tells a story — Visit my website to see the full collection and find the perfect piece for yourself or someone special this season.
One of my favorite features of my online gallery is the room mockup tool. I know how important it is to feel confident that a piece of art will truly fit your space. With this tool, you can preview any print on a variety of room backgrounds, change the wall color, and even upload a photo of your actual room. It’s a simple way to see how a print will complement your décor before you buy—so you can bring a piece of Lake Hodges home with complete confidence.
If there’s a particular image you’ve seen on my social media or during a tour that isn’t yet available in the shop, just let me know. I’m always happy to upload high-resolution versions and help you find the perfect print for your space.
