Considered by many as one of the cutest bird behaviors, Western Grebe parents are known to carry their chicks around on their backs for the first few weeks. Parents alternate between fishing and carrying the chicks. The other parent is just outside the frame with breakfast.

This small Western Screech Owlet is only slightly larger than your balled fist. Having recently fledged, it hasn’t yet strayed too far from the nest and is waiting patiently for one of the parents to return with some food.

This unique image was taken in early Sept of 2020. South East winds on a brush fire burning in the Alpine area of San Diego County was pushing smoke clouds north and west over Lake Hodges. The filtered sunlight reflecting on the particulates on the Lake’s surface generated the surreal appearance of floating embers. Then a Clark’s Grebe entered the frame.
