One of my favorite Grebe courtship behaviours is in full swing here at Lake Hodges.
It is not as predictable as the classic rush, but I find it equally, if not more interesting. It is such an odd behaviour.
A pair of male and female Grebes will dive to the lake bed and come back to the surface with weeds in their bills that they scraped from the bottom. This is usually the final phase of courtship before nest building begins in earnest.
Mixing it up! If you look closely you’ll notice that here we have a Clark’s and Western Grebe at it. This is not that uncommon.
And there is still a fair amount of this going on. Western Grebes ‘rushing’
And this time of year the Grebes aren’t the only birds prepearing themselves for courtship. With it’s green lores this preening male Great Egret is preparing himself for a potential mate.
